#top5 fun new things about the 2011 summer concerts!

We’re counting down on Twitter (@brewsterprod) the top 5 cool new things we’re unveiling this summer at our concert series and music festival. Here’s #5!

5. New names! “Acoustic Nights Free Concert Series” and “Plymouth Independent Music Festival” – like a band changing it’s name, it’s time for a fresh start so we can keep on growing. The shows were previously the School’s Out Summer Concert Series, and Schoolhouse Rock, reflecting our initial focus on the cause of public education – we haven’t abandoned the cause though! This year, we put on No More Pencils, No More Books, a free graduation day concert at the Hedge House to celebrate the graduates of Plymouth Schools and show our appreciation for the school system that produced us.

Stay tuned for #4…

Summer 2011 is coming……this summer. Yay concerts!

Happy mid-January, world!

We do exist! Yes, we’ve disappeared for a bit this winter, but we will indeed be coming back for another go-round on the Plymouth Waterfront. But this time, our 5th year of concerts, we’re doing it a bit differently. Sadly, because of various reasons, we will only be putting on one main stage show at DCR Pilgrim Memorial State Park. But it will be one hell of a show, and we’ll still be rocking the Hedge House lawn with lots of acoustic shows.

You can expect an all-day music festival sometime around the end of July. And before that, starting the first weekend in July, we’ll be giving you 2 solid months of our popular acoustic shows on the lawn of the Hedge House (thanks again to the perennially-wonderful Plymouth Antiquarian Society).

This change was triggered by a wonderful event, the wedding of Brewster owner Scott McEwen and Erin Hollenbeck in the end of June. Don’t forget to congratulate them!

We’ll be seeing you – don’t forget to follow us on Twitter, and EMAIL us if you would like to perform at or sponsor the series. And for a not-so-informative (but Jaws-themed) teaser page, go the the concert series web site (it’ll be back up soon).

The Brewster Sessions are coming soon… sneak peek, plus “41″ covered by Ben Carter

Howdy everyone. Hopefully you’re following along with the School’s Out Summer Concert Series, which is in full swing right now in Plymouth. But in other Brewster news, we’re working on releasing “The Brewster Sessions, Vol. 1″, a collection of Storyteller-type in-studio live recordings we did with Ben Carter, Shaun Dever, Nick Amendolare, and Seth McFadyen. You can check out and download a sneak peek of the album HERE, and listen below to a recording we did with Ben on the day he came in for his Brewster Session. More for fun than anything else (it’s not a live recording like the rest of the Sessions), it’s “41″ by Dave Matthews, performed by Ben Carter:

Enjoy, and don’t forget to come to the FREE School’s Out Summer Concert Series in Plymouth, MA all summer long!

A huge victory for live music in Plymouth: Brewster signs contract with Chamber to operate stage

All shows at the Showmobile stage have been saved! The Chamber of Commerce now owns the stage and has contracted us to operate it.

Hey everyone. We have great news that just broke today in the Old Colony Memorial. We’ve been contracted by the Plymouth Area Chamber of Commerce (new owners of the Showmobile mobile stage) to open and close it for all events this summer. What does this mean? It means that us and every other event planner (like Project Arts and Lenny Vaz) no longer needs to worry about covering the cost of opening the stage – and not because someone has come to the rescue with the money, but because a real solution was found, and no one will have to worry about the DPW fees in the future.

Here’s the OCM article from today:

PLYMOUTH — It looked like this would be the summer the music died, at least on the Plymouth waterfront.

But the town has given its portable stage, known as the Showmobile to The Plymouth Area Chamber of Commerce, which is working with a private organization that will open and close the stage for a nominal fee that will not be passed on to event organizers.

Jon Dorn of Brewster Productions said his company is poised to sign a contract with the Chamber. Brewster Productions was founded by a group of Plymouth South High grads and is locally known for the School’s Out Summer Concert Series, which offers some shows on the Hedge House lawn and others performed from the Showmobile in Pilgrim Memorial State Park. Full of surprises: Hitch and EHB are joined by Jake Hill and sax extraordanaire James Calandrella

(R to L) Jake Hill, Jim Calandrella, and Brian Hitchings rocked Sweetwater Cafe in Boston Thursday, April 29.

The other night was our last show at Sweetwater Cafe in Boston for a little while, but it was something else. Originally, Hitch from 3rd Left was scheduled to play, with support from the Eagle Hill Band acoustic. Then, Jake Hill showed up. And then James Calandrella, “the best sax player in Boston”, according to Hitch (he’s not kidding), showed up and played. It was an incredible show. Here are the photos.

Our next show as of right now is just 24 days away, and happens to be the huge OPENING NIGHT of the 2010 School’s Out Summer Concert Series. Needless to say, we’re very excited for our favorite part of the year. We’ll have some more details about it, but from here on out, come back here for news on Brewster shows in general, but go to the CONCERT SERIES web site for updates on that front.

Check out the photos below, and stay tuned for concert series news (and go to the web site). We’ll be seeing you all quite soon, outside on a warm night on the glorious Plymouth waterfront. Until then, keep both feet on the wheel.

Brewster Productions is a finalist for the ARTY Award!

It’s been almost 3 years since we started this whole Brewster Productions thing, and this year, we’ve been honored with a nomination as a finalist for the Plymouth Cultural Council ARTY Award for significant contribution to the artistic and creative culture in Plymouth. We’re incredibly honored to get this nod and recognition of our hard work and dedication in our hometown. Hopefully we’ll win, but hey if we don’t win against, say, the oldest museum in the entire USA, that’s okay – it’s pretty cool just to be a finalist. Here’s the little description we got in the invitation to the fundraiser dinner (May 7 @ the Radisson in Plymouth), where they’ll be giving out the awards:

Founded in 2007 by Jonathan Dorn, Scott McEwen and Harry Quinn, Brewster Productions’ mission was to empower the youth of Plymouth to engage in musical and creative expression. The series began as a fundraiser for Plymouth schools with six young bands participating in an all-day event. It was called Schoolhouse Rock and soon morphed into the Schools’ Out Summer Concert Series. Alternating between Pilgrim Memorial Park and the Hedge House lawn, the series continues to allow the best in high school and college talent the opportunity to band together for unique artistic expression. Brewster Productions has expanded its boundaries to include producing venues in other states to help promote the talents and expand the careers of young original performers.

Thank you to the Plymouth Cultural Council for the finalist nomination. And be sure to come see BEN CARTER & SHAUN DEVER this Thursday at Sweetwater Cafe!!

Talent show: Hectic, but great. Concert series: Main stage dates up!

Greetings everyone,

We just did sound for the Plymouth South High School talent show the other night – boy was that a workout. We were literally in non-stop motion for 2+ hours. It was a great time, and we really got to test our abilities under pressure. The high school kids were great, and hopefully we’ll be seeing some of them out for the concert series.

Speaking of which, just the other day, we announced the 5 main stage dates of the School’s Out Summer Concert Series. This is a huge deal for us, because the summer has become our busiest and most fun time of the year. There will be 5 main stage dates in July and August, which will feature full bands and other artists, along with around 10 acoustic Hedge House shows. CLICK HERE to go to the concert series Web site and check out the dates. Maybe your band will be up on that stage in 2010…

Remember, the 2 biggest things you can do to help out the concert series are to 1) come to the shows, and 2) DONATE! All money goes into the concert series.

We’ve got a bit of an opening in the Brewster schedule at the moment, which you can expect to be filled with some sort of holiday charity show. In the mean time, Brewster’s getting involved with some independent film, which you should keep an eye out for.

Thanks for listening, until next time, stay tuned for news from your friendly neighborhood Brewster Productions. Happy Thanksgiving, the best holiday of the year!

I have about 4 helpings too many of turkey to eat on Thursday, so I have to start preparing. G’day.

Plymouth Rock Studios! It’s a reality. No, I’m dead serious. Really.

Last night, the Fall 2008 Plymouth Town Meeting voted 126 to 3 to approve a zoning amendment allowing for the construction of Plymouth Rock Studios, which will be the largest installation of the film industry in the country outside California. Ground-breaking is scheduled for Spring 2009.

This is absolutely incredible news not only for the east coast film industry, but for the town of Plymouth. The massive property taxes paid by the studio will help propel the school system to the level it should be at; waning tourism brought on by various economic troubles will likely skyrocket; and there will be 1,500 union jobs created merely for the construction of the studio campus. PRS says there will be 2,000 new jobs created by the presence of the studio.

Read some press/additional info:
Wall Street Journal MarketWatch
Boston Globe
Boston Herald
Cape Cod Times

This is an older one, but I’m in the lede, so it’s pretty sweet:
‘Technicolor dreams soar in Plymouth’ – Boston Globe 5/2008

Also, here’s a letter to editor I wrote in January:
‘Studio best thing to happen’ – Old Colony Memorial 1/2008

Since this will be creating a significant presence of the entertainment industry in Plymouth, which has been in the midst of a cultural revival in recent years, Brewster Productions fully and emphatically supports this project. Its impact on not only our alma mater, Plymouth South High School (the studio will be replacing neighboring golf course Waverly Oaks), but the entire Plymouth Public School system only makes the fact that this project is actually happening all the more surreal.

We ask that everyone continue to offer the overwhelming support shown in the past several months, and remember that the ‘east-coast culture’ will not be lost on this so-called “Hollywood East.” It seems to be the goal of the guys in charge to integrate rather than impose. In other words, Plymouth won’t become LA. So no worries.

Keep it real everyone. We’ll have more concert-related updates soon.
