Brewster LIVES!

Hey everyone,

We’ve been kind of invisible/non-existent in the past couple months. For that we sincerly apologize. Of course, the economic meltdown thing even affected good ol’ Brewster Productions. BUT we’re slowly getting back on our feet, and this summer is going to be a doozy.

Before I get into that, I have to mention some good press we got over the winter. Brewster Productions topped the list of “who to watch in 2009″ in Ryan Wood’s column in the OCM. Along with us were a ton of the rad characters we’ve worked with in the past year-and-a-half: Jake Hill (artist of the year), 3rd Left (best live act), Stephen MacDonald (best new act), and our good friends Shaun Dever and Eagle Hill Band (who to watch). 2008 was a great year of local music around Plymouth, and 2009 is shaping up to be even better. Check out the article:

SO, we have some great news:

1) The second year of the Acoustic Evenings on the Harbor series is officially ON. And it’s going to be even cooler and longer (we’ll likely be starting Memorial Day weekend). Stay tuned for a schedule (and if you’re a musician who wants to play, e-mail us).

2) This summer, the School’s Out Summer Concert Series is an official IRS incorporated non-profit organaization. Awesome (anyone want to sponsor us???).

3) The School’s Out Summer Concert Series is now the name of a multi-venue Plymouth free waterfront concert series, that will include the normal main stage and the Hedge House for our acoustic shows. Basically, all the free waterfront shows we’re doing are part of one big series. It should be pretty awesome.

4) We have a show! Go see the EAGLE HILL BAND at the Black Spot in Hyannis March 13th!!! They’ll be giving away singles off their upcoming EP (out this summer).

That’s all for now. Please support Brewster Productions! You don’t have to give us money, but tell everyone about us and let’s get some publicity for the series. Rock n roll!

Keep it real. Go Brewster.

Plymouth Rock Studios! It’s a reality. No, I’m dead serious. Really.

Last night, the Fall 2008 Plymouth Town Meeting voted 126 to 3 to approve a zoning amendment allowing for the construction of Plymouth Rock Studios, which will be the largest installation of the film industry in the country outside California. Ground-breaking is scheduled for Spring 2009.

This is absolutely incredible news not only for the east coast film industry, but for the town of Plymouth. The massive property taxes paid by the studio will help propel the school system to the level it should be at; waning tourism brought on by various economic troubles will likely skyrocket; and there will be 1,500 union jobs created merely for the construction of the studio campus. PRS says there will be 2,000 new jobs created by the presence of the studio.

Read some press/additional info:

Boston Globe
Boston Herald
Cape Cod Times

This is an older one, but I’m in the lede, so it’s pretty sweet:
‘Technicolor dreams soar in Plymouth’ – Boston Globe 5/2008

Also, here’s a letter to editor I wrote in January:
‘Studio best thing to happen’ – Old Colony Memorial 1/2008

Since this will be creating a significant presence of the entertainment industry in Plymouth, which has been in the midst of a cultural revival in recent years, Brewster Productions fully and emphatically supports this project. Its impact on not only our alma mater, Plymouth South High School (the studio will be replacing neighboring golf course Waverly Oaks), but the entire Plymouth Public School system only makes the fact that this project is actually happening all the more surreal.

We ask that everyone continue to offer the overwhelming support shown in the past several months, and remember that the ‘east-coast culture’ will not be lost on this so-called “Hollywood East.” It seems to be the goal of the guys in charge to integrate rather than impose. In other words, Plymouth won’t become LA. So no worries.

Keep it real everyone. We’ll have more concert-related updates soon.

Schoolhouse Rock update

Hey everyone-

This year we’ll be donating about $300 to Plymouth Public Schools from our t-shirt sales at the 2nd annual Schoolhouse Rock. Brewster Productions will be matching a percentage of that and donating it to a scholarship fund we’re calling the Plymouth Media Group Scholarship for Enthusiasm and Initiative in the Arts and Media (The PMG = Brewster Productions, Sapreme Design, Rock Village Records, Saturday’s Cod Productions and Jon Dorn Art). Yeah it’s a mouthful, but at least it’s pretty self-explanatory. It will be given to 1 or 2 Plymouth South HS seniors at the end of this school year. If you’d like to donate, we’ll set up a PayPal thing soon enough, but for now you can e-mail us and we’ll tell you where to send a check.

Speaking of education, here are some reading materials:

“She likes to party, she likes to rock….she prays our schools won’t run out of chalk.”

It’s come to that time of year when Brewster Productions has it’s big benefit concert for Plymouth Public Schools (Schoolhouse Rock, 8/16/08). Last year we raised $600 to donate. This year we also want to focus on the message: Public schools are just about the most important thing this country has to focus on improving and maintaining. We may only be raising money for one school system, but the entire United States’ public education system needs help and we’re hoping we can at least help the few hundred people who come by our concert know.

Before I go on, I’ll say this: Brewster Productions officially takes no stance on political, social or economic issues. This message is reflective of my own viewpoint predominantly.

That said, please check out Barack Obama’s Blueprint for Public Education. While this isn’t an endorsement of Barack Obama, I do agree with a number of his ideas on public education. I’m not going to write an essay about it in a blog about live music, so if you ‘d like more reading materials, email me at jdorn@skidmore.edu.

Come check out Schoolhouse Rock ’08 this Saturday, August 16th! We promise, we won’t be preaching politics at you – just rock n roll!

p.s. Down with vouchers! Improve urban schools, don’t abandon them!

Check these guys out: Birds on a Wire

Birds on a Wire is a collective of musicians from across the country who work together to help get each other exposure. They play together everywhere from Philadelphia to Georgia to LA to Boston, where Scott and I saw a few of them at Sweetwater Cafe last night. The lineup featured Birds on a Wire artists Jim Hanft, Tim McGlone, John Paul and good friend of Brewster, Jake Hill. The show was great and we’ll be posting some photos just for fun.
